Molokai is a very quiet rural and laid back island that reminds us of how life was back before all of the urban sprawl of the other islands. Molokai is a fairly small island but driving from one end to the other could take all day. It's the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago; 260 square miles (420 sq km) in area, 38 miles (61km) long, and ten miles (16km) wide at its widest point. The West side of the island is the more sunny side while the East side is more lush and tropical. The population is estimated at 8,000 residents, half of whom live in or near the principal town of Kaunakakai. Nearly 40% are of Hawaiian descent, thus the nick name, "The Most Hawaiian Island." There are a lot of things to see and do here but the biggest draw Molokai has is it's ability to relax you. Moloka'i really is an escape from the rat race. Have you ever gone on vacation and come home feeling like you need a vacation? That won't happen to you here. Don't plan too much until you get here. The best things to do are free. Molokai is the perfect place to unwind. You have the whole island thing going with the beaches, trade winds, warm weather and relaxed atmosphere, but you're still in America so you can feel safe. There is a hospital on the island with an emergency room. There are several restaurants, mostly down home island style. There are 2 grocery stores in Kaunakakai town, a general store in Maunaloa town and a Sundries store by Kepuhi Beach on the West end. There are 2 gas stations in Kaunakakai. You will also find plenty of activities in town at the Molokai Fish and Dive. The only fast food on the island is Subway in Kaunakakai. There are no traffic lights on the island and no elevators.
